SWL SPIN FELLOWSHIPS

FAQs for GPs

WHAT DOES SPIN STAND FOR?

Salaried Portfolio INnovation

HOW LONG DOES THE SPIN FELLOWSHIP LAST?

The SPIN Fellowship lasts for 2 years. This is regardless of whether or not you choose to complete 1 or 2 sessions per week.

HOW DOES THE FUNDING WORK?

One session is funded by the fellowship scheme and the second session is funded by a portfolio host. The funding is held by ICSS, this includes any funding sourced through a portfolio host. The fellow’s practice will need to invoice the training hub every month and add the fellowship funds to payroll.

HOW IS MY FELLOWSHIP SESSIONAL RATE CALCULATED?

The annual fellowship sessional rate is calculated pro rata from the total number of sessions/days completed (clinical sessions plus fellowship sessions) and the fellow’s annual salary/annual clinical sessional rate. We include on-costs up to 30% so there’s no cost to the practice.

WHAT IS A PORTFOLIO HOST?

Any employer or institution that would benefit from clinical primary care expertise from our GP Fellows.
e.g. Universities, community care homes, charities, CCGs, PCNs, etc. can support a second session for our Fellows.

I QUALIFIED JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, BUT I’VE BEEN ON MATERNITY LEAVE DURING THIS TIME, CAN I STILL JOIN?

Yes! While the eligibility criteria to join the SPIN fellowship states you must have CCT’d/qualified within the last 12 months, there are allowances for maternity leave, extended sick leave, and career breaks.

I’M EXPECTING TO GO ON MATERNITY LEAVE HALF WAY THROUGH THE FELLOWSHIP, IS IT STILL OK TO JOIN?

Yes! If you go on maternity leave or extended sick leave, we can pause your fellowship and your fellowship payments until you are ready to return to work.

I WANT TO CHANGE PRACTICES, WILL THIS AFFECT MY FELLOWSHIP?

If you are moving to another practice within SWL, we just need to know the details and we’ll ask you to sign some more paperwork. That’s all that’s needed, it’s really easy!

If you are moving to another area of London or out of London, you can transfer your fellowship by getting in touch with the project leads for that area. Please do let us know so that we can update your SWL fellowship end date, and we can help with any contacts you may need.
