As clinicians take on more responsibility and work outside of their usual scope of practice, this increased responsibility requires governance for patient and practitioner safety. Each non-medical profession has core capabilities that they need to demonstrate to be able to take more clinical responsibility. Often practitioners take on more responsibility with experience but through Advanced Practice, this can be governed to improve safety and standards across regions.

The Multi-professional Framework for Advanced Practice highlights the areas of clinical competence for Advanced Practitioners.

The main challenges for clinicians are dealing with uncertainty and taking clinical decisions. This process needs to take time and be supported by a clinical supervisor and their employer.
